Terraced fields are a type of farming that is relatively common, presenting in many countries, especially the countries of Southeast Asia, such as Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and a number of provinces in Southern China. In Hoang Su Phi, people have one crop per year. The time period around May (water season) or September (ripe rice season) is the best time to travel in Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang. Hoang Su Phi is a district in the west of Ha Giang, about 100km from Ha Giang city. Hoang Su Phi is a district that has a relatively complex terrain. It is divided strongly by high and average mountain ranges, and is lower towards flowing directions of Chay River and Silver River, creating three main types of terrain including high mountains, average and low hills as well as narrowed valleys. Hoang Su Phi district is located on the upstream of Chay River, the largest and oldest river. Due to long-term tectonic and weathering process on the rocks, this place has formed diverse land resources.

Like in Mu Cang Chai, people in Hoang Su Phi also grow rice on terraced fields. Until harvest, visitors will admire the yellow rice fields from the foot to the top of the valley like a bright yellow spiral. The terraced rice fields appear in almost every township in Hoang Su Phi district. However, the most focus is still on Phung, San Sa Ho, Nam Ty, Ho Thau, and Thong Nguyen villages. For a long time, the terraced rice fields are not only the culture but also the beauty, the pride of Hoang Su Phi.
