Vietnam, Japan Deliberate Solutions to Preserve Hanoi’s Old Quarters

In international cooperative programme between Viet Nam and Japan, the Management Board of Hanoi Old Quarter, Vietnamese and Japanese architects have discussed solutions for preservation and development of Hanoi’s Old Quarter in 2030 -2050 through “House Vision Viet Nam-Japan 2015” the project.
Hanoi’s Old Quarter is well-known as the historical urban heritage representing for the formation and development of the capital. Ten year ago, the House Vision Vietnam project introduced in Vietnam but is was not feasible at that time due to the complexity of population density, modernization, along with the existence of various historic sites.

Previously, Vietnam and Japan has implemented cooperation projects associated with Hanoi’s Old Quarter preservation such as the Japanese experts from Chiba University and Showa Women’s University studied the architectural styles of old houses, decorative patterns and veranda architecture at Hang Buom, Hang Bac Street for preserving solutions.

From 2006 – 2009, some experts from two aforementioned universities joined hands with Urban & Architectural Institution – National University of Civil Engineering, the Management Board of Hanoi Old Quarter and other domestic universities conducted a research for preservation of Hanoi Old Quarters.
In 2015, the international cooperation program between Vietnam – Japan through the House Vision Vietnam project has proposed a group of oriented solutions for preservation and development of Hanoi’s Old Quarter houses, which aims to assess space-related factors such as communities, land, construction projects in Hanoi Old Quarter. Then, they will propose some solutions to improve house’s quality, preserve and promote the heritage value of the Old Quarter.
